Freedom from the British, but not from English
“Sorry, teacher, I’m so blur.” – Only in Malaysia!
It’s interesting to see how, after 53 years, the development of the country and the English language. Obviously,, the British have long gone, but English has made itself comfortable in the workplaces and social gatherings across this beautiful country.
The Englsh that is used in Malaysia serves a purpose – we get what we need by using it. Well, it works for communciation. The only problem comes when dealing with non-Malaysians who aren’t familiar with this ‘Manglish’.
for example:
handphone means mobile
blur means confused
OK-lah means OK
can? means Can I? or Can you?
outstation means out of town
send someone means take someone
siblings means brother and sisters
scold someone means tell someone off
MC means off sick
retrenchment means redundancy (lose your job)
